U11 Team of Grafters

Thank you to Phil and Pete for umpiring today, much appreciated.

The U11s were due to play Poynton for the first game of the season, but Poynton were unable to raise players. Heaton Mersey Black (they have two teams, black and gold) had their fixture cancelled on them so we able to play each other.

Hurricane Humberto tried to put a dampener on this rearranged fixture but we got the upper hand. The pitch was marked out during the tropical storm without some crucial marking equipment, so it was more of an artists impression of a women's lacrosse field. From the air the line markings may have resembled a motorway network or if you squinted you may see the Mona Lisa.

We ended up with 10 players including one over-age goalie, Jess B (thank you - i will get you the bar of chocolate) while Mersey had 13.

The girls got off on the right foot and were impressive from the start, especially considering that a 1/3 of the team were playing their first game. Passes were being completed, ground balls were being hoovered up and they all ran their socks off. It was like a good Grand National race as you can see by the quarter scores above.

Amber F opened the scoring for us in her first game ever and put in a solid performance showing that she's going to be a force to be reckoned with for the season. Carys J looked like she was having fun and has taken a leaf from Mia Fs book as she netted 5. Jess E got her first goal ever after demonstrating her lightening quick speed which Mersey couldn't handle and Isla G showed great commitment and got stuck right in and got on the scoresheet again.

Mersey kept fighting but struggled against the Stockport defence. Millie (first game) took a big hit in the defensive end as she got charged down by a Mersey attempt on goal, she bounced straight back up with a smile on her face - she's made of strong stuff. She played the whiole game and looked like she'd got a few seasons under her belt, another one to watch this season. Lulah too made her debut for the club and displayed great team spirit and athleticism getting involved in play all over the field.

Jess B was like a cat in the cage and made some cracking stops and was happy clearing the ball to Amy and Lotta who had multiple charges up the field. They both looked extremely comfortable carrying the ball while under pressure showing that practice is paying off. Effy was getting back into the swing of things after the summer break and closed down a number of Mersey attempts on goal.

In the final quarter Mersey's 3 extra sets of legs slightly got the better for us as they had a run of 5 goals against our 2 taking the final score to 11-8. It was a really well contested game and a great foundation for the rest of the season.
