U12s Stockport vs Brooklands

U12s Stockport vs Brooklands

After a short break for half term last week, we were back on the pitch this glorious spring morning for a match at Stockport Lacrosse club against Brooklands. Stockport had a good 14 players available to play today without Finn and George who were playing up in the U14s team, so good luck to them.

Q1 After a decent warm up we were straight into the 10.00am face off and Brooklands straight away looked sharper and more determined than ever against our young Stockport team who seemed lethargic, disorganised and really quite rusty, perhaps from the couple of weeks break. Brooklands scored 3 while Dan Teal managed to score a goal for Stockport leaving us trailing 3.1

Q2 Brooklands were playing really well and with more enthusiasm than Stockport so far in this game, chasing and fighting well for all the loose balls as well as putting together some good passes and it really looked like they were getting in control of this match and really wanted the win, scoring another 4 goals. However Stockport scored 4 also by Jacob B and Dan Teal, again though, still leaving us trailing at half time by 7-5 to Brooklands.

Q3 It looked as if Stockport had decided enough was enough now at half time and then suddenly it looked like they found another gear completely for this quarter and quickly got their game faces on by scoring eight consecutive goals during the quarter with absolutely no reply from Brooklands, bring us up front for 13-7 to Stockport.

Q4 Again Stockport carried on relentlessly with everybody getting involved fighting and defending and winning the small battles for the ball well where it counts, some great hard work being done in midfield by Ethan and Henry chasing the ball down, and we were right back into the game, scoring another 4 goals and eventually winning the match
17- 9!

Final Score Stockport 17  Brooklands 9

Goal Scorers Dan Teal.  4  Jacob B.  13

Assists Dan Teal 3 Josh B 3 Ethan 1 Finn 1 Tom Smith 1 Jacob B 1

The black eye Henry received earlier didn't deter him.

Two big smiles for two big goals - really well done!!!

Thank you to Phil J and Andrew H for umpiring, Isabelle B and Hannah J for score keeping and helping out with swapping the goalies around and to the parents for helping set the pitch up, take great pics, sort the kitchen and clean up post game

I'm not one to endorse dope testing at U11 but this week the girls were on fire and on a completely new level. The weather turned from heavy rain to a lovely pleasant Sunday morning, perfect for the U11s to turn it on and step up into a new gear.

From the first whistle they went straight for goal. The girls seemed pumped up and ready play! To be honest, I can't remember exactly who scored the first goal (Mia F or Lucy P), as you can see we had 6 scorers.

Mia J - 1 goal, 1 assist amazing all round game
Isla volunteered to go in goal and suited up. At first, Stockport had most of the possession and a good flurry of goals to start the game off. When Mellor did get the ball in their offensive half, the defence of Lotta, Carys, Summer and Effy turned away effort after effort, protecting their goalie. Mellor kept pressing but the girls stood strong and played great positional defence, forced Mellor turnovers and cleared the ball with confidence. It was great to see early passes coming from the clearing ball carriers. They were sprinting out of their own half and looking up field toward the open players.
Good defence played high up the field
Another noticeable difference this week was the attention to ground balls. Our completion rate on picking up ground balls was a vast improvement on previous games which helped with more possession and increased chances on goal.

Offensive passing had also improved dramatically with Amy T, Jess E and Daisy moving really well, getting into open spaces forming a nice structure around the goal. Passing and movement at the offensive was evidenced by the three recorded assisted goals. Great to see the girls making a move towards goal and if its not on, throwing a good pass to the open player. Great all round teamwork. We also witnessed Mia F take her defender on from behind the goal and neatly tuck one of her 6 away (wonder where she learnt that Dad?).

Carys clearing with her new stick and making the up field pass
Pownall power - Daisy, Jess E, Lotta and Mia J look like they've been playing for about four seasons and not just starting their careers. Their attitude to the game, effort they put in, sense of team spirit and overall enthusiasm is commendable!

Pep talk from coach
Special mention this week to Lucy and Fran. Both leading from the front again, 9 goals and 1 assist between them. Both are maturing into fantastic team players, supporting the newer players, taking stints in goal, playing with big smiles and being all round good eggs - well done both!!

Strong game from Daisy ploughing upfield towards goal
The team is improving every week and we are looking forward to our next match up against Cheadle on the 24th February. Enjoy more great pictures below.

Isla - youngest on the pitch, great individual effort to bag her first goal

Power cradle from Fran - Very very impressive performance

Mia F - whatever you had for breakfast, have the same again before every game!!

Familiar position for Mia

U14s at Home to Cheadle

What a great season this is turning out to be, not just from a Stockport point of view, but the quality of the league is excellent, with good opposition and a high standard of lacrosse being played by those teams who participate in the 'Metros' program.
Playing any Cheadle teams, you know that you are in for a good game, and this merged team with Sheffield brought plenty of numbers and an eager anticipation for the game, and it was a tough encounter this morning with no inch spared or given all over the pitch.
We started brightly, face offs were competitive with no team overly dominating, but we did get possession and we commanded the early passages of play racing to a 3-0 lead, before allowing Cheadle an opportunity to break and score one at the other end, finishing the quarter 3-1 up.
From here on in, it was very tight and physical and lots of battling all over (from both teams), but not a lot of difference in the scoreline or the play.  Straight from the start Cheadle pulled one back, giving them a 1 goal deficit and belief that they can pull this back.  An equal quarter at 2-2.  The coaches had to ask the referees to ensure that they were using the flags to protect the players of both from some over zealous slashes and cross checks.
Q3 was a good quarter for the boys in blue, extending their lead with a further 3 goals to 1. Q4 was a 0-1 quarter to Cheadle.
Lots of positives, strong performances for all the boys.  Positive communication from our keeper (on the whole), and improvements throughout.
8 goals today, 5 assisted ( 3 from Cameron, Rhys and Hugo).  2 goals from Cameron, Rhys and Hugo and one-a-piece from Dan and Joel, made it a good mornings work.
