Big smiles from a great team!

Thank you Pete for umpiring and thank you for the help in the kitchen and setting up the pitch (Chris, Paul SH, Paul F, Rob).

A frosty morning called for a close pitch inspection but the ground was consistently smooth although little hard in some areas. But, the sun was coming up and we were not going to call it off.

The girls got stuck straight in and started clearing the heavy frost with plenty of running. Carys took the first goal putting Stockport in the lead. Iris followed suit and snagged her first ever goal (hopefully the first of many) and the second Stockport goal!! I'm sure she's got plenty more tricks up her sleeve with her quick turn of pace. Carys claimed her second and Mersey pulled one back before the end of the first quarter. Hot water bottles were dished out to each team to defrost the icy fingers - this went down a treat.

Carys took the draw to start the second quarter quickly rattled in her third before she tried to break the pipe by shooting a laser past the Mersey keeper. Jess had a couple of chances which she created with her speed and quick side step and finally bagged goal number five for the 'port. The girls were battling all over the field and Holly, in her first game was playing great positional defence, picked up loose balls and was completing passes - most impressive for her first appearance at Cale Green. Keep it up Holly!!.

Amber and Lilly (Lilly's second game) showed true team spirit playing hard from the off. They chased and picked up ground balls, looked up field and moved the ball and helped out their team mates all over the field. Phoebe L played the whole game with a massive smile on her face is fitting in nicely into the team. I can see her getting on the scoresheet soon with her tidy stick skills.

Amy T was solid at the back, making block after block in her new boots. After another good stop, she picked up the ball and went the whole length of the pitch to net goal number six. They don't call her End-to-End Amy T for nothing. Iris, Lily-May Liv were getting increasingly involved scooping ground balls and making passes. Carys closed the second quarter with her fourth goal leaving Mersey 7-1 down and little shell shocked.

Millies Sm played the first half in goal and had done a sterling job, but she was itching to get out field and warm up a little. She did so by blasting in the first goal of the second half making it 8-1 Stockport. She turned to the bench and beamed a big smile - great game Millie.

Milly Sh took over the goal tending duties and she put in an amazing performance making numerous stops. Mersey could have easily come back into the game if it wasn't for Milly's keen eye and cat like skills - Cat-in-the-Cage.

Jess had a couple more great dodges on goal but just missed claiming her second goal. Her dupe step is going to hurt some defenders ankles. Effy and Isla were plugging away from the first whistle, and we all new at some point they were going to score. Isla made it her business to slot in goal number 10 and then thought, she may as well do it again and took goal number 11 to bring the score at the end of the third quarter 11-3. Another great game for Isla.

The hot water bottles were now luke warm and Stockport started to look a little tired in the last quarter. Mersey wanted to even things up a little and kept pressing and had some impressive chances on goal. Milly Sh battled valiantly in the crease but eventually the determination from the black and gold attackers squeezed three past the keeper. Effy wasn't happy with this and scored her first for ever goal taking the final score to 12-6 in Stockport's favour. Excellent work Effy!

The girls are passing the ball more each game and it really is great to watch. Keep it up girls! Lets give everyone a run for their money at the Christmas 8s.
